HIGHAM PARISH COUNCIL CCTV
Welcome to Higham’s CCTV information page
You may have noticed the installation of CCTV cameras in several positions around the village. This initiative, driven and owned by the Parish Council, will be used to protect public safety and protect the rights of individuals in the village.
There is evidence that CCTV is a crime deterrent, plus, where crime has been committed, it will assist the Police and other lawfully entitled persons in the identification, detection, apprehension and prosecution of offenders. Its principal aim is to deter and / or identify road traffic offences, anti-social driving or behaviour and other criminal activity. To be admissible as evidence the CCTV system is compliant with restrictions under the Data Protection Act.
The position of cameras has been optimised to capture activities on the main village roads. The system will not be used to invade the privacy of any individual, except when carried out in accordance with the law. Footage is not monitored live, instead it records footage which can be retrieved through a formal request and only for lawful purposes. For example, if your car is stolen or your house broken into, we can provide the Police with footage that might lead to identification and apprehension of the perpetrators; likewise acts of anti-social behaviour, dangerous driving etc. Viewing of recorded footage will not be provided unless formally requested and for legal purposes and all requests will be reviewed and recorded by the Parish Council.
A copy of our CCTV policy can be found here and it relates directly to the location and use of the CCTV and the monitoring, recording and subsequent use of such recorded materials. The CCTV scheme is registered with the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO), registration reference C1288873, under the terms of the Data Protection Act 2018.
